An important part of being a farmer is having the necessary and/or helpful tools to aid you in your gil-gathering-goodness. Here I have listed some helpful things to consider getting!
Adventuring Fellow: Possibly one of the most helpful things you can have is your Adventuring Fellow! Getting this baby isn't too difficult, but does require a rank of at least 4. Your NPC is helpful in the fact you can set him/her to perform different duties from various Rendezvous Points! The most helpful being 'Healer'. While your npc will still aid in battle, she'll also heal you when necessary and cast various enfeebling/enhancing spells! This is extremely help when farming monsters that still cause enough damage over time to validate resting. Gobbiebag: While they do get pricy, its a very good idea to invest in them. Having an increased storage compacity allows you to carry more while farming and making less trips back to a town to drop off items or having to throw away things! http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/The_Gobbiebag_Part_I
Treasure Hunter: A very nice thing to have when farming for items off various monsters. Thieves get this ability at 15, which means you need to be at least level 30 to access it for your sub.
Internet Resources: Always helpful, being able to look up information on the fly and get up todate Auction House prices! Of course, a lot of times you may not be able to access both FFXI and browse the internet, so I'd suggest printing off material if you have to!
